Arthur Kaliyev Joins New York Rangers: Fresh Start After Waiver Move
The New York Rangers have added a new face to their team, acquiring 23-year-old Arthur Kaliyev from the Los Angeles Kings. The talented forward, known for his exceptional power play skills, enters the Big Apple scene after the Rangers claimed him off waivers. "Good luck in the Big Apple, Arty!" the Kings wished him, signaling a new chapter in his hockey career.
Early Challenges and Promising Potential
Kaliyev, originally hailing from Uzbekistan before moving to the United States, began his professional journey when he was picked in the second round of the 2019 NHL Draft. Despite his promising potential, this season started off on a rocky note for Kaliyev, who is still recovering from a broken clavicle he suffered during training camp. Consequently, he hasn't played in an NHL game this season.
Throughout his career, Kaliyev has achieved a respectable record, with 35 goals and 36 assists over 197 NHL games. His ability to capitalize on power play opportunities makes him a valuable asset to the Rangers, who are currently struggling near the bottom of the Metropolitan Division alongside the Islanders. With 16 losses in their last 22 games, the Rangers are looking for a spark.
Roster Changes at the Rangers
To accommodate Kaliyev’s arrival, the Rangers made room by sending Matt Rempe back to Hartford in the AHL. Rempe, who had been suspended for elbowing Dallas’ Miro Heiskanen, will soon be eligible to return. Kaliyev's entry comes with a modest salary, just over the league minimum of $825,000, which could give the Rangers some financial breathing room as Kaliyev approaches restricted free agency.
The Ripple Effect in Los Angeles
Back in Los Angeles, the Kings made the decision to place Kaliyev on waivers after activating players Trevor Lewis and Trevor Moore from injured reserve. Kaliyev had also seen a brief stint with the Ontario Reign in the AHL from mid-December to late December before the move. The Kings' decision cleared the way for Kaliyev to join the Rangers, who were seventh in the waiver priority at the time.
Kaliyev’s transition to the Rangers could not only bolster their offense but may also offer the young player a rejuvenating environment. With his sights set on proving his prowess in New York, both Kaliyev and the Rangers hope this move can spark a turning point in the season.
