Anaheim Ducks Boost Accessibility for Fans with New Broadcasting Approach
In a strategic move aimed at enhancing fan accessibility and engagement, the Anaheim Ducks are transitioning their local game broadcasts to a combination of direct-to-consumer streaming and traditional television broadcasts. This shift is poised to make Ducks games more accessible than ever before, reaching a broad audience throughout the team's regional TV market.
A significant part of this new strategy will see 65 of the Ducks' games next season broadcast on an over-the-air channel in Los Angeles. Additionally, all games will be available for regional streaming on the Victory+ streaming service at no cost to viewers. The Victory+ platform will offer a free, ad-supported service, ensuring that fans can enjoy games without a subscription fee.
A New Partnership and Platform
The Ducks have collaborated with A Parent Media to facilitate this new broadcasting arrangement. According to Jason Walsh, the chief operating officer for A Parent Media, "The Ducks are already a significant content coordinator and have a team president with a broadcasting background." This partnership is expected to leverage the strengths of both organizations to deliver high-quality broadcasts to fans.
Ducks president Aaron Teats expressed the organization's enthusiasm for the new arrangement, stating, "We are so pleased to announce that fans in our entire television market, via stream or traditional television (cable or over-the-air), will see locally broadcast games free of charge." Teats emphasized the importance of connecting with the entire fan base, adding, "It is a significant organizational priority to connect Ducks fans with our entire market and for every fan in our region to have the opportunity to watch Ducks games without cost across multiple, accessible platforms."
Broadcast Availability and Coverage
The Ducks' regional territory is extensive, encompassing Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Imperial, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties, as well as Hawaii. The over-the-air broadcasts will be accessible on Channel 13, providing a clear, no-cost option for fans in the Los Angeles area. For those who prefer streaming, the Victory+ app will become downloadable on smart TVs, tablets, and smartphones starting in September.
Former Broadcaster and Current Challenges
The Ducks' previous broadcaster was Diamond Sports Group, whose contract with the team expired at the end of the 2023-24 season. Notably, Diamond Sports Group is currently embroiled in bankruptcy proceedings in Texas, which may have influenced the Ducks' decision to seek a new broadcasting partner.
Despite these challenges, Diamond Sports Group will continue to carry games for eight NHL teams during the 2024-25 season and maintains agreements with other major sports organizations, including the Los Angeles Angels (MLB) and the LA Clippers (NBA).
Maintaining Familiar Voices
In a move likely to please longtime fans, the Ducks will retain familiar voices as part of their broadcasting team. Brian Hayward and John Ahlers will continue their roles, providing continuity and expertise during the games.
Regional Impact and Broader Trends
The Anaheim Ducks are not alone in seeking new ways to broadcast their games. The Florida Panthers, for instance, are moving their local broadcasts to Scripps Sports, while the Dallas Stars plan to stream their games regionally on the same Victory+ platform the Ducks will use. These changes indicate a broader trend in sports broadcasting, where teams are increasingly utilizing digital platforms to reach fans directly.
This strategic shift is designed to enhance fan engagement and accessibility, ensuring that every fan in the Ducks' regional market has the opportunity to watch games without incurring additional costs. By embracing both traditional and modern broadcasting methods, the Anaheim Ducks are setting a new standard in sports media accessibility.
