Texans Release Diontae Johnson Prior to Clash with Chiefs
In a surprising move just before their crucial playoff match against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Houston Texans have parted ways with wide receiver Diontae Johnson. Head coach DeMeco Ryans acknowledged the decision succinctly, stating, "With Diontae, unfortunately, it didn’t work out and we’re on to the Chiefs."
A Brief Stint in Houston
Johnson’s journey with the Texans was short but eventful. Having joined the team on December 23 after being waived by the Baltimore Ravens, he found himself participating in just two games for Houston. During the regular-season finale against the Tennessee Titans, Johnson made an impact by catching two passes for a total of 12 yards. In the Wild Card face-off against the Los Angeles Chargers, he was similarly productive, catching one pass for 12 yards after being targeted once. Despite only playing 16 snaps, he managed to play 22 percent of the offensive snaps in that game, showcasing his ability to integrate quickly into a new system.
A Road Traveled Through Multiple Teams
This season has seen Johnson donning jerseys for four different teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, Carolina Panthers, Baltimore Ravens, and finally the Texans. Earlier in the year, Baltimore facilitated his trade to Carolina, packaging Johnson along with a sixth-round pick in exchange for a fifth-round selection. His journey also included a brief suspension for conduct detrimental to the team before being picked up by Houston, marking a complex year for the receiver. Not too long ago, Johnson was a Pro Bowl standout with the Steelers, where he logged 107 receptions for 1,161 yards and eight touchdowns in 2021.
Looking Forward to the Texans' Upcoming Battle
As the Texans prepare to face the Chiefs, they'll be without some key receiving options with Stefon Diggs and Tank Dell unavailable. This opens the door for players like John Metchie III, Robert Woods, and Xavier Hutchinson to step up and support lead receiver Nico Collins. The Texans’ offensive lineup remains compelling, although the absence of Johnson and others presents challenges.
The decision to release Johnson right before a critical game underscores the unpredictable nature of the NFL, where roster dynamics can shift dramatically from one week to the next. Fans and analysts alike will be watching to see how the Texans adapt as they aim for playoff success.
