Blue Jays Acquire Shortstop Paul DeJong in Trade with Cardinals
In a significant mid-season move, the Toronto Blue Jays have acquired shortstop Paul DeJong from the St. Louis Cardinals. The trade comes at a crucial time for the Blue Jays, as their all-star shortstop Bo Bichette has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to right patella tendinitis.
Bichette has been a key player for the Blue Jays this season, leading the team with a .321 average and 17 home runs. However, his injury leaves a void in the infield, one that DeJong is well-equipped to fill. With a .233 batting average, 13 home runs, and 32 RBIs in 81 games with the Cardinals this season, DeJong brings both experience and potential to the table.
DeJong's performance in 2019 was particularly noteworthy, as he hit a career-high 30 home runs and 78 RBIs. Despite a dip in his numbers since then, the Blue Jays are optimistic about what DeJong can bring to their lineup. His versatility is also a valuable asset, as he has expressed openness to playing second base or shortstop when Bichette returns from injury.
Hatch Recalled, Pearson Optioned
The Blue Jays' roster changes didn't stop with DeJong. Right-handed reliever Thomas Hatch has been recalled from the Blue Jays' triple-A affiliate. Hatch's return to the majors provides an additional option in the bullpen for the Blue Jays.
On the other hand, Nate Pearson has been optioned to triple-A following a disappointing performance against the Baltimore Orioles, where he gave up four runs. The decision indicates the Blue Jays' intent to give Pearson some more development time in the minors.
DeJong Eager for Fresh Start
Speaking about his trade, DeJong said, "I value my defence and I really take pride in what I'm doing out there, so I'm thankful that they're given me a chance to play shortstop." He also expressed his excitement about joining the Blue Jays, saying, "There's a lot of things up in the air and I'm open to it all. I'm just happy to be here with a fresh start."
As the Blue Jays navigate through this period of transition, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how these changes impact the team's performance. Only time will tell if these moves will lead the Blue Jays closer to a playoff berth.
